Dried Mealworms are the dehydrated larvae of the darkling beetle (Tenebrio molitor), widely used in the UK as a premium, high-protein food source for wild birds, fish, and reptiles. They offer all the nutritional value of live insects but without the mess or movement, making them a clean, easy-to-store option for wildlife lovers.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: Honey-yellow to light brown, brittle, cylinder-shaped larvae measuring roughly 2 to 3 cm in length.
  • Nutritional Profile: Extremely rich in essential nutrients. A typical analysis yields roughly 53% to 60% Crude Protein, 24% to 28% Crude Fat, and around 5% moisture.
  • Processing: Most commercial mealworms in the UK are quickly frozen and then roast-dried to lock in essential vitamins and oils without using artificial preservatives.
UK Wildlife & Feeding Applications
  • Garden Birds: They are highly favoured by insectivorous British birds like Robins, Blackbirds, Blue Tits, and Starlings. They can be fed year-round, especially in winter when natural insects are scarce.
  • Rehydration: During the spring breeding and fledgling season, it is strongly recommended to soak the dried mealworms in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes. This softens the food, making it safe and hydrating for young chicks to swallow.
  • Other Animals: They make a great snack for pond fish, amphibians, and certain reptiles.
  • Important Safety Restrictions: Under UK regulations (DEFRA), dried mealworms must not be fed to poultry or chickens due to strict rules surrounding imported animal proteins. Additionally, wildlife rescue groups advise against feeding them to wild hedgehogs, as they can cause metabolic bone disease if eaten in excess.
