Description
Collection only,
Pet Corrector is a popular dog training aid in the UK designed by renowned animal behaviourist Dr. Roger Mugford to instantly interrupt and distract dogs from unwanted behaviours. Produced by the Company of Animals it uses compressed gas to emit a loud, harmless “hissing” sound that mimics the natural warning sounds made by animals like snakes, cats, and swans.
How It Works
The primary goal of the Pet Corrector is not to punish the animal, but to break their focus. When a dog is distracted by the hiss, it creates a crucial “window of silence”. This allows the owner to step in with a positive command (such as “sit” or “quiet”) and reward the dog for obeying.
The Company of Animals outlines this via the W.A.G. technique:
- Witness: Catch the dog in the act of the bad behaviour.
- Act: Press the spray to emit a short, one-second burst.
- Give: Give your dog a command and reward them once they stop.
Common Uses
It is highly effective at stopping bad habits at home or in public, including:
- Excessive or territorial barking
- Jumping up on people or furniture
- Stealing food from counters
- Chasing or place avoidance
- Deterring dog fights or aggressive behavior
Safety and Best Practices
- Direction: Always point the can away from your pet’s face. They only need to hear the noise, not feel the air.
- Distance: Keep the can at least 1 to 3 metres away from your dog. Many trainers recommend hiding the can behind your back so the dog doesn’t associate the physical bottle with the scare.
- Duration: Only use quick, one-second bursts. Never hold the trigger down or use the can upside down.
- Contraindications: Do not use on puppies or kittens. It should never be used on anxious, nervous, or highly noise-sensitive dogs. It is also ineffective against anxiety-driven habits like separation anxiety barking.
Product Options
The spray uses a dry, odourless inert gas (HFC 152a) that is non-toxic and leaves no residue. It features an updated built-in safety cap to prevent accidental spray
